Advice for Cruisers

Dinghy Cruising is adventuring in the wild element of the sea, estuaries, lakes and rivers.  Infinitely rewarding but not without risks.  

We all know that 'it is better to be ashore wishing you were at sea, than at sea wishing you were ashore', and that 'responsibility for the vessel and its crew rests with the helm', but how to translate this into safe enjoyable cruising?
