Nationals day 1 – a frustrating start…

Does anybody else remember the episode of Postman Pat (the famous stop-motion animation children’s programme from the 1980’s) called Postman Pat’s Foggy Day? He spent the whole programme driving his little red van around Greendale in a pea souper, getting lost and having many little adventures.

Simon Townsend with a John Cunliffe novel, perhaps?

The first day of the 2018 Wayfarer Nationals was just like that. We waited all morning for the fog to clear and a gentle south westerly to set in. Simon Townsend read his book. The fog cleared. The fleet was launched. We set off for the practice race. The fog returned. The windward mark was found. The gybe mark was found. The leeward mark and finish line disappeared in the fog. The PRO helpfully used a RIB as a hare to lead the fleet. The hare lost the fleet! Several boats overshot the leeward mark and beat back to the finish line. We all finished (except Mike Mac who was OCS). We sailed ashore. Simon Townsend went back to his book.

Summary. One practice race completed which was won by Brian Lamb and Sam Pygall (well done) but no points races. BBQ tonight and try again tomorrow.
