I too would have thought a well-practiced routine of dropping the mast on the pivot pin would have been the best thing, no?

It depends which way the wind’s blowing! You don’t want to get blown down the jetty at 20knots on a windy day because you already raised the main, do you?

  • @Colin Parkstone wrote:

One thing often seen is the obsession to have the main in tight or on the centreline in stronger winds.

The trouble is, what I need a lot of the time is to point high, as high as possible to counteract the tide which runs at 3-plus knots coming straight at me to get to the first mark. Heading as near as possible to the wind…[Read more]

  • Hi Dave, the Mountbatten Centre looks v well appointed!

I did a bit of research on http://www.boatlaunch.co.uk and the nicest looking spots for a launch I found were Dittisham Sailing Club on the Dart and East Portlemouth opposite Salcombe. Possibly also at Exmouth too, or Starcross SC over the river if they allow visitors

So, a rule of thumb on chocks would be:

Light airs – no chock – so sail is flattened by extra bend
Medium – mast chocked so it doesn’t bend more than the ‘neutral’ amount and gives max sail depth
Heavey/overpowered – no chock, flatter sail.

I’m working on the basis that I have 1 chock that holds my mast in its medium wind setting, and remove it…[Read more]

Chock at deck level only in very light weather to prevent the mast from bending.

Is this to stop any bend or to keep the mast at the pre-bend setting?

I’m guessing the latter because trying to stop any bend is likely to result in an inversted bend above deck level, no?

    POSTSCRIPT

Today I moved the mast foot back 10mm. Now I have all mast settings within the recommended limits. I just need to make a 5mm chock as that’s what’s left in front of the mast

    Yay!

Some people aren’t very used to using the internet. Some other people are very good with it and tend to forget this. I think that’s what that was. When the latter meets the former it’s best just to point things out in a friendly way. Nothing is to be gained by casting nasturtiums on someone’s character

What’s underneath the mast foot track? What would I be screwing into if/when I move it?

Currently it seems to be screwed in with 3 woodscrew-like screws.

Also, are there any reasons not to use Araldite as an adhesive for the varnished ply mast slot side spacers?

OK, I’ll forget messing with the king post hole 🙂

If you can’t move the pin further aft, perhaps you need to reposition the mast step?

I’m going to leave that idea on the backburner until I’ve done everything possible with currently possible adjustments. Right now the mast is as raked forward as it can be (7190mm to the…[Read more]

The new side spacers. A temporary arrangement to get me sailing this weekend (hopefully)

I want to find a more durable material to make them from. Anyone worked with PTFE?

    *lunchbreak report*

Without ‘the thing’ in place I can achieve the required pre-bend. (The front of the mast is hard to forward of the slot it sits in.) But, I cannot get the pivot pin in – it fouls the rear edge of the hole in the mast . The mast foot pin needs to move backwards by 2-3mm, but there’s no more movement to aft available.

    Is it a…[Read more]

How much is the front of “The Thing ” behind the front of the mast gate front below ?

Maybe you could just cut out the front of ” The Thing ” and leave the sides to help side chock the mast?

So, I got a new spreader bottle screw and started mast setup this afternoon.

I went through all the steps 3 or 4 times. By the time I finished rake and rig tension were within tolerance and the pivot pin is loose, but I only have about 8-10mm of pre-bend.

I’ve been cranking back the spreaders to try and get the required 25mm-38mm of pre-bend on.…[Read more]

It’s 6mm. I’m going to go through the whole setup process again this week as soon as I borrow a rig tension gauge.

Yes Algol, the pivet pin holes in the tabernacle. They have a measurment postion and if they happen to be to far forward, that may not help your prebend.

Just measured it and all seems well.

Transom to mast pivot is dead on what it should be. Transom to shroud is about 20mm less than the max allowed.

I’m going to check these measurements, as I’m a bit baffled about the lack of pre-bend right now.

Not that the mast doesn’t bend at all. At the weekend it pointed lovely…[Read more]

You should drill out enough so that it’s only the sharp thread that cuts into the alloy you want to screw into. A bit of trial and error with a set of drill bits is the best way to do it

  • They come in all sorts of diameters and lengths and head types. See here, for eg: http://www.tridentuk.com/sailing/Self_Tappers.html

Which you select depends on the thing you want to screw down, but on the mast or boom you wouldn’t want to use something that’d protrude very far inside because of the risk of fouling some control lines.
