Folks – just a reminder that the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) 2017-20 come into force on the 1st January.   The section that is most relevant to most of us is Part 2 – When Boats Meet (basically pages 14-19 in the rule book of almost 200 pages).

    A useful link is:

This is a pdf version of the updated rules, showing all of the changes made to the 2013-16 RRS.

There are some changes to the rules which are clearly seen in the above link on the World Sailing site, although nothing too major!

My big hobby horse is about taking penalties.  When you break a rule and are informed that you are going to protested,  be take a penalty IMMEDIATELY, if you feel you were in the wrong.   Don’t sail on, don’t call the protestors bluff – do your turns!  However, if you feel you were in the right, protest the other boat.

Rule 44.2 (in Part 4 of the rules) is clear:

After getting well clear of other boats as soon after the incident as possible, a boat takes a One-Turn or Two-Turns Penalty by promptly making the required number of turns in the same direction, each turn including one tack and one gybe.

If you sail on and do turns later in the leg, or just before the finish, you can still be justifiably be protested.

We should be helping less experienced learn the rules, rather than not showing good rule observance ourselves.

    Rant over!

    • Many clubs now use arbitration and advisories, which are great.
