    Hello “Farers”,
Thus far in my deliberations I favour the foam insert at the peak. However never having seen one, I can only imagine that they must be quite large and therefore seriously affect performance. Would appreciate
    some advice on this matter.

Performance is affected far less than tying a fender or plastic container to the mast head :-0

Thank you Peter, that would be my last choice.

Blow up bag is the best it can be left in there all the time just inflate it when required on gusty windy days look at Wayfarer mag there is an advert in there from Aroeluff spars Ralph Roberts he does a large bag and can fit the pocket to the sail this is a good system adds very little weight to the top of mast as well and works well when reefed and you can roll or flake the sail with it fitted just let the air out.

    Thanks marmalade,
That does seem an attractive solution and might be the one I settle for in the end.
    Much obliged, Pete W7059
