    Hi,

I have used the RYA route planning software whilst doing my Day Skipper theory course over the winter, and although basic, it does have some good route planning features (inc tidal stream effects etc).

I have a set of Garmin Mapsource charts, and use the very basic Mapsource viewer to plot routes, but it does not seem to be aimed at this kind of chart (it will plot a route from Lands End to John O Groats via the roud quite happily!).

Does anybody know if there is any software out there to run on a PC that will do ‘proper’ route planning & simluation, using Mapsource files??

    Thanks

    Pete

Not exactly an answer to your query but for good scale inshore route distance planning, waypoints and possible transit points, try Memory Map for the area you are planning on sailing in. Very cheap copies for 1:50 000 can be picked up on ebay for about £15. It ‘talks’ to your GPS directly transferring all waypoint info and will also provide a visual track of your trip from your GPS.
