    Hi

The white WF we bought in 2011 is looking a bit grey. Have been advised to use Oxalic acid to clean and the buff with cleaning compound. One problem is that it is not easily to get to source of electrical power. I wondered if the likes of “Cif” and elbow grease might do the job. Tips?

Oxalis acid is ok for shallow surface marks, try Dettol Mildew and Mould Cleaner, close to a miracle product but wear gloves and rinse and rinse again to get it off you and the boat once you are done.

You can buy a sort of abrasive compound specially for GRP, International do one called Liquid Rubbing and there are others you will find in real and on-line chandlers. Don’t use T-cut, it is designed for baked on car-body paint and is too aggressive for gel coat. I also would not use an electric polisher, if you go near a chine edge or the edge of the transom you will be through the gel coat in no time and there is no way back from that. More important than electricity for a polisher is access to a tap for clean water to help you with the wash down with soap and degreaser beforehand to make sure you are not grinding dirt into the gel coat.

Remember that the gel coat is only paper-thin. Be gentle.

What is wrong with a bit of elbow grease? No outlet needed.

    • If your boat is kept on a mooring remove those brown deposits with diluted oxalic acid and promise her to keep her in the dinghy park from now on.
    • Clean with water and soap.
    • Bring shine back with wax.
    • Only when the surface is still dull after waxing or when it is scratched, use a very fine polish to bring the shine back. Cif is way too coarse and will dull the surface. When done finish with wax.
