Does anyone know what wood is used to make wayfarer benches? I want to have a go at making some new ones. Having seen the price of new ones I need a cost effective alternative.

I used sapele for all of the new woodwork that I have incorporated into W3035 Bramble. This includes new framing to side benches & foredeck, splashboards and strengthening to the mast step and centre board casing. Colour of sapele does vary slightly, when first cut & machined it is quite pink but does darken as it is exposed to daylight.
The advantages are that is relatively inexpensive and readily available from most good builders timber merchants or joiners who would machine it to basic planed dimensions.

If it’s any help I have a set of aft benches that have sat in my shed for about 15 years now – about time I had a clear out.
