National Circuit Series sponsored by Hartley Laminates on the 8th and 9th November. The series consisted of five high quality open meetings which tested competitors sailing skills on two estuaries, the Solent, the River Thames, and a reservoir.
The series started at Blackwater SC in May and continued at Warsash SC in June. The fleet returned to the East Coast to compete at Waldringfield SC in August. The first three events were sailed in blustery conditions, but competitors were faced with a complete contrast in with a real drifter at Upper Thames SC on an otherwise beautiful September weekend. The final event at Bough Beech was sailed in strong winds (see separate report in Yachts and Yachting).
The National Circuit series was entered by 51 different helms and crews, of whom 12 qualified by competing in three or more open meetings. Winners of the sparkling new Hartley Laminates Trophy were Roger Challis and Mark Johnstone from Waldringfield SC who came from behind to beat Colin May from Parkstone YC when Colin was unable to attend the final event. Gordon Harris from Waldringfield SC was third.
