I used to have a wire halliard and it was ok when all I used to do was race. now I use 5mm dyneema and haven’t noticed it stretching. 5mm is well over the strength you need but I chose 5mm for ease of handling. If you have your halliard too long it also means that you can chop a bit off after a season or two to extend its life.
