Sorry to hear of this problem. Is there any chance you might have strained the knee launching or recovering the boat? I find that moving a heavy launching trolley generally involves some sideways pulling, which is probably not ideal for knees.
Like Matt I can recommend cycling as an over-40’s running substitute, and Jim’s patent knee rub sounds good, apart from the rub part.
