Even though I have also had lots of power tool experience I would always avoid the use of a belt sander on the ply decks. It is not worth the risk of sanding through the top ply veneer that could be very thin particularly if the decks have been stripped before. There is also a risk of doing the same damage at the edges if you don’t keep the sander perfectly flat on the surface.

Hot air stripper and scraper every time.
