Just keep in mind a motor is a sailing aid, it is not a navigation aid.
Your boat will not go in to a plane unless you use an engine that would sink the boat. That being said, your hull speed is your limit and no amount of horsepower will change that. That means that, in a tide running against you with a greater speed than your hull speed, you will not get home in time for supper.
A bit of extra horsepower is nice to have in a chop, but other than that you have it for others, as in “towing”. My Honda 2.2 keeps me at hull speed at about half throttle, but I have no idea how much HP that would be.
