A friendly competitive bunch of Wayfarers arrived for the ‘Wayfarer Easterns’ at Waldringfield Sailing Club on 25\26 May. They were treated to the finest weather of the season so far.
Race 1 began with a flood tide. Richard and Mark Hartley reached the top mark first, avoiding a capsize, and won. Mike McNamara and Simon Townsend took 2nd with Mike and Rani Pert taking advantage of place changes in 3rd.
Race 2 was a complicated course, Tips (P), Blue (STARBOARD), Finish – with only 6 boats completing it correctly. Bill Whitney took 1st with Mike Pert 2nd having made big gains with many retiring ahead of him.
Race 3 included Green Point a mark rarely used in club racing halfway between Waldringfield and Denmark. Mike Mac led at the top mark and Hartley’s brave decision to go to the right shore didn’t pay off resulting with him going for a swim. Refreshed, he fought back to take 6th.
Race 4 consisted of a long beat on the flood tide. Downwind the island and covered mudflats made it difficult for visitors. Locals Roger Challis and Mark Johnston led by the leeward mark, but it didn’t last with Mike Mac was 1st, Hartley’s 2nd and Challis 3rd.
Race 5 the finale was long beat but shortened to Tips. Leaders approached the mark in fading wind and locals, the Perts, arrived with the returning wind finishing with a single tack, snatching the race from McNamara by 2 feet.
Certainly everyone left the water tired, having experienced tidal river sailing at its best.
